The Alvey Programme was a large-scale UK research funding programme that was ran from 1984 to 1990 as a response to the Japanese Fifth Generation project. One of the four core areas was "Intelligent Knowledge Based Systems" and other areas had major AI aspects including natural language processing in the "Man-Machine Interface" area.
